AN IRREVERANT EXPERIENCE

By Jules Feiffer
Directed by David Pera
Assisted by Mike McCalment

Meet the Newquists! Not exactly Ozzie and Harriet, Jules Feiffer’s American family plunges us into a dark comedy of urban life. If you ever wondered what goes on behind the multiple locks on a Manhattan apartment door, Little Murders offers a scary, fast-paced and wildly funny glimpse. Last performed by CTG in the 1990-91 season, Feiffer takes us on a funny, dark, disturbing tour of the violent underside of American life, and even as we laugh, we feel a chill of recognition.

Synopsis
Feiffer, author of the film CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, shows us a modern metropolitan family of matriarchal mother, milquetoast father, normal cuddly sister, and brother who is trying to adapt himself to his sexual orientation. Sister’s fiance’ is a fellow who knows how to roll with the punches; he figures that if you daydream while being mugged, it won’t hurt so much. They have a hard time finding a preacher who will marry them without pronouncing the name of God.

Director's Corner: from David
Usually this space is provided for the director(s) to comment on the "meaning" behind the play. I do not presume to do that here. Rather, I leave it to you, the audience, to take whatever you'd like from this production. Personally, I think Little Murders is funny as hell. But some of you may be shocked, dismayed, or dare I say, even offended. That's all right because then we will have accomplished what we set out to do—to create a slice of life, a living breathing phenomenon of which you are a part, that envelops and embraces you for two hours in the deep, dark bosom of the theatre. Shalom!
